Operating Systems

Nanos is available for Linux, Mac OS X, Solaris, and Windows.
This is possible because Nanos is written in the Java programming language. All relevant modern operating systems support Java, so we are able to provide Nanos versions for almost every modern operating system that you can find anywhere.
Nanos output is even more universal, as it adheres to the international norms and regulations for Greek text files. As long as any operating system adheres to international norms and regulations, it will be compatible with what has been produced with Nanos.

Here are the detailed requirements for the operating systems that we know support Nanos (there are also other operating systems on which Nanos will run fine, but we cannot list all of them):

Linux
You must have Java Runtime Environment version 1.4.1 or higher installed on your system, but not version 1.5.0. This is because of a bug in version 1.5.0 for Linux. Actually, Nanos will still run under 1.5.0, but the search-and-replace feature does not function, which is tedious. Solution: use Nanos with version 1.4.1 instead. This bug in version 1.5.0 is only there on Linux, not on other operating systems!

Nanos version 1.52 for Linux comes with Java Runtime Environment 1.4.2_03 (included on the Nanos disc).
Other Java Runtime Environments for Linux are available from http://www.java.com.

There are English and German versions of Nanos for Linux/Solaris.

Mac OS X
Nanos runs under Mac OS X version 10.2.8 or higher. It is fully compatible with Mac OS X Tiger and Leopard. You must have Java support installed (Java Runtime Environment version 1.4.1 or higher). Mac OS X Tiger and Leopard come with pre-installed Java support. If you are runnning an older version of Mac OS X, you can install Java support online from Apple via the Mac OS X Software Update.

Nanos works on the new Intel-based Apple computers as well as on the older PPC-based architecture.

Sorry we cannot support Apple's older Mac OS operating system, as Apple has discontinued providing up-to-date Java Runtime Environments for it.

Solaris
Solaris is the UNIX operating system by SUN Microsystems, Inc., with a long history of continuous excellent improvement and refinement. Solaris is used in the most sensitive and demanding environments, such as space agencies, aeronautics, airport management, and wherever else an absolute maximum of reliability, safety and top-notch performance are a must. SUN are also the makers of the Java technology and programming language, so it is natural that Nanos (written in Java) runs under Solaris. The latest Solaris version (Solaris 10) for Intel platforms is available for free download from SUN! Click here to go to the download page.

As with all other operating systems, a Java Runtime Environment is required. Install version 1.4.1 or higher.

Nanos version 1.52 for Solaris comes with Java Runtime Environment 1.4.2_03 (included on the Nanos disc).
Other Java Runtime Engines for Solaris are available from http://www.java.com.

There are English and German versions of Nanos for Linux/Solaris.

(Other forms of) UNIX
Nanos runs on all versions of UNIX for which a Java Runtime Environment is available (version 1.4.1 or higher). In fact, Linux, Mac OS X and Solaris are examples of such UNIX versions. If you are using another version of UNIX, and if Java Runtime Environment version 1.4.1 or higher is available for it, Nanos is likely to run on it.

Please contact the manufacturer of your UNIX version to find out if a Java Runtime Environment (version 1.4.1 or higher) is available.

If so, you should be able to work with the Linux/Solaris version of Nanos.

There are English and German versions of Nanos for Linux/Solaris.

Windows
Nanos runs on almost all Windows versions, including:

  • Windows Vista
  • Windows XP Professional
  • Windows XP Home
  • Windows 2000 Professional
  • Windows Server 2003
  • Windows Me
  • Windows 98 SE (Second Edition)

You must have Java Runtime Environment version 1.4.1 or higher installed on your system.

Nanos version 1.52 for Windows comes with Java Runtime Environment 1.5.0_01 (included on the Nanos disc).

Other Java Runtime Engines for Windows are available from http://www.java.com.

Zeta
The makers of Zeta have announced a modern Java Runtime Environment to become available later in 2005. We might be able to provide a Nanos version for Zeta when this has become available.
