Effortless Greek editing
on Linux, Mac OS X, Solaris and Windows

Nanos offers you everything you need for easy, reliable Modern and Ancient Greek text editing. With Nanos, you can produce print-perfect Greek text for use in office or layouting packages, web pages, databases, text archives, XML streams, or any other modern data environment. Tired of complicated keyboard gymnastics, of hunting around on your keyboard for characters and diacritics? Had enough of missing characters and diacritics? Tired of being restricted to one single software package or one single operating system? Run into problems sharing your Greek texts with others? Need to put your Greek text on the web? Diacritics are floating around on your print-outs? Ugly-looking fonts? Non-unicode fonts that only work on one operating system and are no good for the web or your university library? Tired of difficult-to-install Greek typing plug-ins that modify your office software? Tired of difficulties with searching and replacing in polytonic Greek text?

Welcome to the world of Nanos. Made by classicists for classicists. We have solved the problems because we know them... The solution: a virtual keyboard on the screen with ALL the characters that you need for Modern and Ancient Greek, ready-made with all relevant polytonic combinations of diacritics. Imagine producing ANY character-diacritic-combination with one single mouse click! Text output that can be used in any modern office software such as OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, in all web browsers, all modern database packages, in fact in any modern software package with full Unicode support. Cut and paste between Nanos and any modern application - on virtually any modern operating system: Linux, Mac OS X, Solaris, Windows. Online and offline. Write once, use everywhere: send your Greek texts to your friends, colleagues, web designers or printing company and know that they will display and print exactly as they show up on your screen: perfectly.

All the Greek characters you need ...
Actually, hundreds of them. Everything you will need to write Modern or Ancient Greek: aspirated rho, variant shapes of many characters (such as beta, theta, kappa, rho, sigma), capital digamma, koppa, number markers, iota with tremma/ diaeresis and circumflex, capital omega with iota adscriptum, punctuation marks, apostrophe, omega pi, kai symbol, san, sampi, stigma, you name it. They are all there in our unique one-click Virtual Keyboard. Put them in your text with a single mouse click. In the same way the Nanos Virtual Keyboard lets you search and replace even the most complicated Greek characters or polytonic combinations, as fast as possibly conceivable. Try searching and replacing in a polytonic/Ancient Greek text in any other software, and you know what we mean....

... at a single mouse click ...
The Nanos Virtual Keyboard is a keyboard on the screen, a "soft keyboard". It makes it possible to enter any Modern or Ancient Greek character with a single mouse click, totally without your computer's physical keyboard! Apart from doing away with all those complicated hotkeys, the Virtual Keyboard makes it possible to select even the most outlandish specialized character (say, upper-case archaic koppa) in a flash. And the Nanos Virtual Keyboard works in exactly the same way on all operating systems, while physical keyboards with their hotkeys and language settings differ from operating system to operating system and software package to software package. On some operating systems you can activate a Greek keyboard layout for your physical keyboard. This will let you type basic characters (alpha, beta, etc.) from the physical keyboard and accented characters from the Virtual Keyboard. Although the Nanos Virtual Keyboard of course contains the basic characters as well. So with Nanos it is even possible to create and edit Greek texts on systems where a Greek keyboard layout is not available, such as ODBC servers or other mission-critical equipment in data centers.

... in undamageable constant form ...
Nanos displays and prints perfect Greek characters on all operating systems, software packages and printers, thanks to our almost 20 years of experience with font handling and multilingual software development. Nanos does not use any separate diacritics characters which could create trouble in display or print. We also do not use any non-ISO techniques, such as undocumented OpenType glyph combinations or other obscure mappings. Instead, Nanos uses completely pre-designed ready-made characters in openly documented ISO-compliant Unicode character ranges. Nanos uses standard TrueType fonts which display and print exactly as designed and totally identically on all relevant ISO-compliant operating systems, software packages and printers. Read more...

... on all relevant operating systems ...
This is something few other editors can boast: to be available for all relevant operating systems. Nanos works identically on Linux, Mac OS X, Solaris and Windows. Everything works exactly the same: text editing, Virtual Keyboard, fonts. Result: you can use Nanos in diverse workgroups, across continents and company rules. Publishing houses running Mac OS X can use Nanos just as their authors who may be using Linux or a version of Windows. Experts in universities or national libraries using SUN servers can update their Greek text archives using Nanos right on their systems. Nanos lets you even edit Modern and Ancient Greek in environments where Greek keyboard layouts may not be installed, such as mission-critical ODBC servers.
Display and print is perfect and identical on all platforms, thanks to our carefully hand-crafted pre-composite characters: all characters get displayed and printed as single units, so there are no more out-of-control accents, breathing marks or other surprises. Read more...

... for all online and offline purposes ...
Nanos output can be directly fed into web pages, databases, XML processes, into other software packages such as OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, GoLive, Macromedia Dreamweaver, Flash, and indeed any software package that is able to handle modern text data that comply with international norms and regulations. To see if your software is up-to-date, check if it can handle UTF-8 or UTF-16 text files and Unicode fonts.

... in compliance with ISO norms ...
Nanos reads and writes text in UTF-8 format, which is fully compliant with the international norms and regulations applicable to Greek text editing (specifically, ISO 10646). Nanos works with Unicode fonts and gives access to the code ranges "Greek" (character positions 0370-03FF) and "Greek Extended" (character positions 1F00-1FFF), including all polytonic combinations of characters and diacritics. No OpenType or other proprietary data types are used, neither for fonts nor for output. Strictest possible ISO compliance is at the heart of Nanos' ability to work identically on many different computer platforms. Thanks to full ISO compliance, Nanos output can be used in web sites, XML processing and in fact as input for all up-to-date software packages that read text data, whether they be DTP layouting packages, word processors, data bases, graphics packages or indeed any other type of software. ... with high-quality Greek Unicode fonts and support for your own ...
Nanos comes with some good Unicode fonts with support for Ancient and Modern Greek. Nanos works with all Unicode fonts that contain the character ranges Greek and Extended Greek. Some such fonts are included in operating systems. More such fonts are available from academic and commercial font developers. Unicode fonts are required by international norms and regulations and are exchangeable across operating system platforms and software packages, apart from being the web standard. There is also a variety of font developing tools with which it is possible for users to develop their own Unicode fonts. Read more...
